C1 Expert-Consultation Part 5: Expert Consultation
Lesson 105 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
Every swipe trains a model of what keeps you scrolling: which headline you pause on, which video you replay, which outrage you cannot resist. Platforms auction these predictions to advertisers, so your future attention is sold before you feel it. Designers call the tricks variable rewards and infinite scroll; psychologists call them slot machines. The costs surface slowly: shorter books, thinner sleep, public life tuned for anger. Some users fight back with grayscale screens, app timers, and dumb phones. Regulators debate whether attention is a market to tax or a commons to protect. Either way, the scarcest resource online is no longer information but the mind that reads it. The incentives are structural rather than personal. A platform that shows fewer ads earns less, so even well-meaning engineers optimise for time on site, and the strongest signals come from content that provokes. Researchers studying recommendation systems find that outrage travels faster than nuance because it is simpler to model: anger produces quick, unambiguous clicks. Some remedies are technical, such as ranking by satisfaction rather than watch time, and some are legal, such as limiting data collection on minors. The hardest part is measurement. Because nobody feels the hours they did not spend reading, the loss is invisible in the data the industry collects, which is precisely why critics distrust metrics that only count engagement.

๐ Grammar Notes
This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: expert consultation. Reading: The Attention Economy.
