๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Breaking news rewards speed, but slow journalism rewards depth: reporters spend months on one story, checking archives and knocking on doors. The model borrows from slow food, valuing craft over volume. A magazine piece on a single fishing village might trace quota laws, fuel prices, and migration across three generations. Readers pay because the result cannot be skimmed from a feed; the context reframes headlines they thought they knew. Critics note the cost: months of salary for one article few may read. Yet award lists suggest the gamble pays culturally, as slow pieces set the agenda that fast outlets follow for weeks. The economics are unforgiving but not impossible. Publications that take the gamble rely on subscriptions rather than advertising, because advertisers want frequency and slow work produces few pages. Some fund long projects through memberships, where readers pay for a stream of considered work rather than a single investigation, and others sell the reporting on to newspapers once it is finished. Editors admit that most slow pieces earn little directly; their value lies in the authority they create, which readers reward with loyalty and sources repay with trust. In an environment where speed is free, the scarce product is time spent verifying, and that is what subscribers increasingly believe they are buying.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: expert consultation. Reading: Slow Journalism.
