C1 Expert-Consultation Part 2: Expert Consultation
Lesson 102 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
Surveys show most people trust doctors and scientists more than politicians, yet trust varies sharply by topic. Vaccines and weather forecasts score high; nutrition advice and economics score low, partly because findings seem to flip yearly. Psychologists point to two drivers: competence and motive. Readers ask whether researchers know their field and whether funders benefit from the result. Open data, preregistered trials, and plain-language summaries all raise perceived honesty. Paradoxically, admitting uncertainty also builds trust: forecasters who state a 70 percent chance of rain are believed more than those claiming certainty and failing. Science earns confidence not by being right every time, but by showing its workings. Trust also depends on who is speaking. Studies find that audiences accept uncertain findings more readily from a doctor they know than from an anonymous expert on television, because familiarity supplies the honesty that statistics cannot. Institutions therefore invest in local messengers: nurses explaining vaccines, farmers explaining soil, teachers explaining climate. Scepticism is not always irrational either. When industries fund research whose conclusions conveniently protect their profits, suspicion is a reasonable prior rather than a failure of education. The practical lesson from the surveys is that transparency about methods, funding, and error does more for public confidence than confident simplification, because it lets people judge the claim instead of the tone.

Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: expert consultation. Reading: Why People Trust Science.
