B2 Ethics Part 9: Ethics
Lesson 79 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
At midnight, while most of the city sleeps, nurse Elena begins her shift at the emergency ward. The corridors are quiet except for humming machines, ringing phones, and the soft steps of the night team. Elena has worked nights for six years, and she knows the rhythm: a rush of patients after midnight, a calm stretch near three, then another rush before dawn. Night work pays more, and Elena likes the smaller team, but the cost is real. Studies link long night shifts to poor sleep, stress, and health problems, and Elena has felt all three. She sleeps with heavy curtains, wears earplugs, and keeps her phone silent until two in the afternoon. Her hardest nights involve road accidents, when the team must act fast with little information. Her best nights are quiet ones, when she can talk with worried patients who cannot sleep. Last winter, an old man who came in with chest pain thanked her simply for holding his hand while they waited for test results. Elena keeps a notebook of small moments like that, and reads it when she feels exhausted. She plans to move to day shifts next year when her daughter starts school, but she says nights taught her patience, focus, and respect for people who keep the world running while others dream.

๐ Grammar Notes
This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: ethics. Reading: The Night Shift.
