B2 Ethics Part 10: Ethics
Lesson 80 of 10 in this unit.
π Reading Passage
In 2019, a librarian in Lisbon opened a donated box of old books and found a thick handwritten manuscript tied with string. The title page named an unknown author and a date: 1934. The story described a sea voyage, a storm, and a village that matched no known map. The librarian sent photos to a historian, who confirmed the paper, ink, and handwriting style fit the 1930s. For months, experts debated whether the text was a lost novel, a false memoir, or an elaborate joke. Two universities scanned every page and compared the language with newspapers from the period. They found street names, prices, and ship schedules that matched real records from 1933, details a modern faker would struggle to invent. A publisher then released the book with notes explaining every uncertain passage. Readers loved the vivid storm scenes and the strange ending, in which the narrator refuses to name the village he claims to have saved. Critics argued about its meaning: some called it an adventure story, others a warning about pride. The author's family was never found, and no other work under his name exists. Today the manuscript sits behind glass in the library, and visitors often ask the same question the experts asked first: who wrote it, and why did nobody publish it for eighty-five years.

π Grammar Notes
This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: ethics. Reading: The Lost Manuscript.
