๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

For decades, the River Trent ran dark with waste from factories, farms, and towns along its banks. Fish disappeared, birds left, and people avoided the dirty water. Ten years ago, a coalition of local councils, farmers, and volunteers began a cleanup that many called impossible. They started by mapping every pipe that emptied into the river, then forced factories to install filters and fined those that refused. Farmers received payments to plant wide strips of grass along fields, which trap soil and chemicals before they reach the water. Volunteers spent weekends pulling plastic, tires, and old machines from the banks. Scientists tested the water every month and published the results openly, so the public could see slow progress. After four years, insects returned, then small fish, then herons that had not been seen for a generation. The coalition also rebuilt natural bends and shallow pools where young fish can hide. Today the river is not perfect: heavy rain still washes pollution from roads, and some chemicals remain in the mud. But swimming areas have reopened, a riverside path draws thousands of walkers, and property values nearby have risen. Organizers say the key was patience plus data: steady small actions, measured honestly over many years.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: ethics. Reading: The River Cleanup.
