Trillions of microbes live in the human gut, weighing as much as the brain. They digest fibre our own enzymes cannot break down, releasing short-chain fatty acids that feed the gut lining. They also train the immune system: germ-free mice develop weak defences until microbes are introduced. Diet shapes this community quickly; switching to a plant-rich menu changes bacterial ratios within days. Fermented foods such as yoghurt and kimchi add live strains, while excess antibiotics can wipe out diversity for months. The advice is simple: eat varied plants, choose fermented foods, and avoid unnecessary antibiotics. The community also communicates with the brain. Bacteria produce molecules that travel in the blood and influence mood, appetite, and even pain sensitivity, which is why researchers speak of a gut-brain axis rather than two separate systems. Animal studies show that transferring microbes from anxious mice to calm ones can shift behaviour, although such findings rarely transfer neatly to people. What is clearer is the influence of early life: babies born by caesarean section acquire different communities than those born vaginally, and breastfeeding supplies sugars that feed specific beneficial strains. None of this makes a single food or supplement miraculous. The microbiome responds to patterns, not to single meals, and it resists quick fixes while rewarding months of varied eating.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: ethics. Reading: The Gut Microbiome.
