๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

When Lena quit her safe job at a bank to start a company that delivers fresh food to offices, her friends thought she was taking an enormous risk. She had saved enough money for one year, rented a tiny kitchen, and hired two cooks. The first three months were brutal: few customers, long hours, and a delivery van that broke down twice. Lena spent her evenings visiting offices with free samples, listening to managers complain about late lunches and unhealthy menus. She changed her offer three times, adding vegetarian boxes and a simple online ordering page. By month five, four companies signed weekly contracts, and word spread. A local newspaper wrote about her, and orders doubled in two weeks. Then new problems appeared: she needed more staff, a bigger kitchen, and a loan she was afraid to take. She negotiated carefully with a small investor who agreed to fund the expansion without taking control of the company. Two years later, her firm serves forty offices and employs twenty people. Lena says the hardest lesson was not cooking or marketing but managing cash: knowing exactly how much money comes in, goes out, and remains for bad months. Her advice to founders is blunt: test fast, keep costs low, and never sign a contract you do not fully understand.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: creative industries. Reading: The Startup Gamble.
