B1 Career Part 7: Career
Lesson 17 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
Behind the old library stood a piece of land that nobody used for ten years. It was full of rubbish, broken glass, and tall weeds. Last spring, a group of neighbors decided to turn it into a community garden. About forty people joined, including retired teachers, young parents, and teenagers who needed volunteer hours for school. On the first Saturday, they cleared the rubbish and dug the hard soil. A local shop gave them free seeds, and a builder lent them tools. They divided the land into small plots, and each family cared for one plot. They planted tomatoes, beans, carrots, pumpkins, and sunflowers around the edges. Water was a problem at first, until they built large barrels to collect rain from the library roof. By summer, the garden was full of green plants and bright flowers. Children who had never seen vegetables grow learned to pull carrots from the soil and taste warm tomatoes in the sun. In August the group held a small festival and shared the harvest with elderly people in the street. The garden also brought unexpected benefits: neighbors who had never spoken became friends, and the teenagers asked to continue the project next year. In the end, small steady habits decide progress more than any single lesson, and learners who review a little each day keep what they study.

๐ Grammar Notes
This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: career. Reading: The Community Garden.
