๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

Every autumn, the riverside town of Hoi An glows with thousands of paper lanterns. The festival began centuries ago when traders from Japan and China settled along the river. Each family lights a lantern and sets it afloat with a wish for health or luck. Stalls sell sweet cakes, grilled corn, and silk souvenirs. Musicians play drums on wooden boats while children chase the reflections on the water. The mayor says the festival brings visitors, but for residents it is simply a night when the whole town shines together and old neighbours meet again. The festival began as a way to welcome the rainy season. Families float small lanterns with candles and a wish written inside. Boatmen collect the lanterns at midnight so the river stays clean, and the paper is dried and reused the next year. Old residents remember when only a few hundred lights floated past; now visitors book rooms months ahead. Some shopkeepers worry that the old songs are played only for tourists, so the town pays a choir of schoolchildren to learn them. When the drums start, the streets go quiet, and even the youngest visitors listen. Nobody is sure how long the tradition will last, but everyone agrees that the river looks kinder with lights on it.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: culture. Reading: The Festival of Lights.
