πŸ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

Anna lives in a small, cosy flat in the city centre. She moved there last year after graduating from university. Her flat has two rooms: a living room and a bedroom, plus a small kitchen and a bathroom. The living room is the place where she relaxes after work. In the centre of the room there is a comfortable sofa with soft cushions. Next to the sofa stands a wooden coffee table where Anna keeps her magazines and a few decorative candles. On the wall hangs a bright painting that she bought at a market. A floor lamp provides warm light in the evenings, and a small bookshelf holds her favourite novels and some photo albums.

The kitchen is compact but functional. There is a fridge, a stove, and a washing machine tucked under the countertop. Above the sink, Anna installed a set of open shelves where she stores plates, glasses, and cooking pots. A round dining table with four chairs is placed near the window, making it a nice spot for breakfast. She often prepares simple meals like pasta, salad, and toast.

Anna's bedroom is simple and tidy. She has a double bed with a blue duvet and two soft pillows. Beside the bed is a nightstand with a lamp and a small alarm clock. A wardrobe stands against the wall, holding her clothes and a few scarves. A mirror hangs above the wardrobe, helping her get ready each morning.

The bathroom is small but clean. It contains a shower, a sink with a cabinet, and a toilet. Anna keeps her toiletries in a small basket on the cabinet. She likes to keep the bathroom fresh with a scented soap and a tiny plant on the windowsill.

Even though the flat is not large, Anna feels comfortable because everything has its place. She enjoys decorating each room with personal items, such as photos, plants, and colourful cushions. The flat is her home, and she loves coming back to it after a busy day.

πŸ“ Grammar Notes

In this lesson we focus on the present simple and the use of countable nouns with articles. Use the present simple to talk about habits and facts about home life, for example: "She lives in a flat" or "The kitchen has a fridge." When talking about one item, use 'a' or 'an' before a singular countable noun: "a sofa", "an alarm clock". Use 'the' when the listener knows which item you mean, such as "the lamp" or "the bathroom". For plural nouns we usually omit the article: "She has three chairs" or "There are many pictures on the walls." Remember to add -s for third‑person singular in the present simple: "He cleans the kitchen every day." Also, use possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her) to show ownership: "her bedroom", "my bookshelf". These structures help you describe rooms, furniture and daily routines clearly.
