Food & Drinks
Lesson 1 of 7 in this unit.
📖 Reading Passage
Emma works in a small café near the river. Every morning she opens the shop at eight o’clock and prepares fresh drinks for the customers. She likes to start the day with a cup of strong black coffee and a slice of toast with butter and jam. The menu at the café is simple but popular. People can choose between tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fresh juice, and smoothies. For food, the café offers sandwiches, salads, soups, and pastries. The most ordered sandwich is the chicken salad sandwich, which contains grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, and a light mayonnaise. Many customers also like the cheese and ham toast, served with a side of mixed fruit.
During lunch, the café becomes busy. Families often sit together and share a large plate of pasta with tomato sauce. Some customers prefer a light snack, like a yogurt with honey and nuts. Emma always asks if anyone wants extra sugar or milk with their tea or coffee. She knows that many people in the town are health‑conscious, so she also offers low‑fat milk and sugar‑free drinks.
In the afternoon, the café serves a special: a warm apple crumble with vanilla ice‑cream. It is a favourite for children after school. Emma enjoys talking about the ingredients she uses. She says that fresh fruit, real butter, and natural sugar make the desserts taste better than using artificial flavours. She also mentions that the café buys its coffee beans from a local roaster, which supports the community.
At closing time, Emma cleans the tables and prepares the bakery items for the next day. She checks the stock of bread, cheese, and vegetables, and writes a list of what needs to be bought. Even though the work is tiring, Emma loves her job because she meets many people and shares her passion for good food and drinks.

📐 Grammar Notes
When talking about food and drinks, we often use countable and uncountable nouns. Countable nouns (e.g., sandwich, apple) can be plural and need a/an or a number: "a sandwich", "two apples". Uncountable nouns (e.g., milk, juice) do not use a/an and are not plural: "some milk", "a glass of juice". For preferences we use "like + verb‑ing" or "like + noun": "I like drinking coffee" or "I like coffee". To give advice or suggestions we use "should" or "could": "You should try the apple crumble". When describing quantity we use expressions like "a cup of", "a slice of", "a piece of". In the past simple we talk about finished actions: "Emma opened the café at eight". For habits we use the present simple: "She prepares drinks every morning".
