📖 Reading Passage

Native audio

Emma works in a small boutique in the city centre. Every morning she opens the shop at eight o’clock and arranges the new clothes on the racks. The shop sells many different items: t‑shirts, jeans, dresses, skirts, jackets and shoes. Emma likes to help customers find the right size and colour. She often asks, “Do you prefer a bright colour or a more neutral tone?”

One Saturday a tourist named Luca visited the boutique. He wanted a comfortable outfit for a weekend trip to the mountains. Emma showed him a warm sweater, a pair of sturdy trousers and a waterproof jacket. Luca tried the sweater on and said, “It feels soft and warm, exactly what I need.” He also liked the blue scarf that matched his eyes. Emma suggested a pair of hiking boots, but Luca said he already had shoes at home.

Later, a group of teenagers entered the shop. They were looking for the latest fashion trends. They asked for skinny jeans, graphic t‑shirts and a leather jacket. Emma explained that the leather jacket was on sale for twenty percent off. The teenagers were excited and tried several items. One of them, Maya, chose a pink dress with floral patterns for a birthday party.

Emma also works part‑time as a fashion assistant for a local magazine. She writes short articles about seasonal styles. In her latest article she described how people combine classic pieces, like a white shirt, with modern accessories, such as a bright hat or a patterned bag. She reminded readers to choose comfortable shoes for long days.

At the end of the day, Emma closes the shop, checks the cash register and tidies the fitting rooms. She feels proud because she helped many people find clothes that fit their style and needs. She believes that good clothing can make anyone feel confident and ready for the day ahead.

📐 Grammar Notes

When talking about clothing, we often use the verb ‘to wear’ with the present simple: I wear a coat in winter. For habits we use ‘usually’ or ‘often’: She usually buys jeans on sale. The comparative form is common for describing fit: This shirt is tighter than the one you tried yesterday. Use ‘can’ for ability: You can wear a scarf with a jacket. For suggestions we use ‘should’ or ‘could’: You should try the blue dress. When giving advice, the structure ‘If you want + infinitive, you should…’ is useful: If you want to stay warm, you should wear a sweater. Remember that adjectives of size (big, small, long, short) usually come before the noun: a big coat, short sleeves. In questions about preference we use ‘Do you prefer… or…?’ and answer with ‘I prefer…’. Finally, the past simple is used for past shopping experiences: He bought a leather jacket last week.
