๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Clock time chops the world into quarters; deep time dissolves it. A granite cliff holds mica that cooled 300 million years before the first dinosaur, yet weathers under fingernails in a decade. Nuclear engineers must now design warnings intelligible in 10,000 years, longer than any living language has survived. Finland buries waste in bedrock and carves pictographs of skulls, betting images outlast verbs. Critics call such planning hubris: societies cannot bind descendants they cannot imagine. Geologists answer that humility cuts both ways. Acting as if the far future were empty licenses dumping; acting as if it were peopled forces containers, records, and restraint no quarterly report would fund. The difficulty is informational as much as moral. Any warning must survive not only decay but translation, institutional collapse, and the certainty that future readers will not share our categories. Engineers therefore favour redundancy over elegance: markers in several languages, diagrams, archives distributed across countries, and records written on media that need no power to read. Some proposals abandon messages altogether and rely on hostile architecture, thick concrete and no explanation. Ethicists object that treating descendants as threats is self-fulfilling. The more defensible design keeps an invitation alongside the warning, so that whoever opens the vault finds not only a barrier but an account of why it was built.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: peer review. Reading: Thinking in Deep Time.
