๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

Every second Saturday, a group of neighbours cleans the riverside park. Teenagers pick litter, parents prune bushes, and Mr Aziz brings soup for everyone. Last spring they planted forty young trees along the path. The council lent gloves and tools after seeing photos of their work. Children made signs asking dog owners to use bins. By autumn, ducks returned to the pond and joggers praised the tidy trail. Newcomers are welcome: the only rule is to stay for soup and share one story before leaving. The group keeps a simple record of what changes. They photograph the same stretch of path on the first Saturday of every month, note the plants that flower, and count the birds they can hear. The pictures from three summers show how quickly a trimmed hedge becomes a nesting place. Local shops now donate gloves, paint, and juice. When a storm knocked branches across the trail, forty neighbours arrived with saws and cleared it in an afternoon. The council, impressed, asked the group to advise on a second park. Nobody had planned to become an organisation; they simply kept turning up, and the habit did the rest. New helpers always hear the same welcome and the same instruction: work an hour, then eat.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: entertainment. Reading: Weekend Volunteers.
