๐Ÿ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

Before 1869, crossing America took six months by wagon. The transcontinental railway changed that to a single week. Thousands of workers, including many Irish and Chinese immigrants, laid tracks through deserts and over mountains. They blasted tunnels with black powder and bridged deep canyons with timber trestles. When the golden spike joined the rails in Utah, telegraph wires carried the news instantly. Towns sprang up along the line, cattle moved east, and newspapers travelled west. The railway also harmed Native nations, whose hunting lands were cut apart. Today museums along the route remember both the achievement and its cost. Building the line demanded more than muscle. Surveyors mapped passes before a single rail was laid, and engineers solved problems of snow, rock, and desert heat that had stopped earlier expeditions. Camps appeared and vanished within months; some grew into towns with hotels, newspapers, and schools. Travel that had once meant risking illness and robbery became ordinary, and families separated by a continent could visit within a week. The railway also standardised time: local clocks gave way to railway time so timetables would work across thousands of kilometres. Few inventions have reorganised daily life so thoroughly, and fewer still have carried such uneven benefits for the people whose land the tracks crossed.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: community. Reading: The Railway That United a Country.
