A2 Work-Basics Part 9: Work Basics
Lesson 109 of 10 in this unit.
π Reading Passage
It rained all weekend in the small town of Brindle, and the two children of the Carter family felt bored. On Saturday morning, rain hit the windows so hard that they could not play football outside. Their mother suggested they build a tent in the living room using blankets and chairs. The children carried pillows, books, and biscuits into the tent and pretended they were explorers in a jungle. In the afternoon, their father taught them a card game that his grandmother had taught him. At first the rules seemed difficult, but after three rounds the children played well and laughed loudly. On Sunday the rain continued, so the family decided to bake a cake together. Each person had a job: the mother mixed the flour and eggs, the father heated the oven, the daughter added sugar, and the son watched the time. While the cake baked, they cleaned the house and listened to music on the radio. When the cake was ready, they drank hot chocolate and ate warm slices. The children said it was the best weekend in a long time, even though they never left the house. Sometimes bad weather brings a family closer together. In the end, small steady habits decide progress more than any single lesson, and learners who review a little each day keep what they study.

π Grammar Notes
Present continuous covers current duties: I am training two newcomers. Past simple reports completed tasks. Polite workplace requests use could you and would you mind. Articles matter for roles: a manager, the manager on duty, managers in general with no article. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: work basics. Reading: The Rainy Weekend. As a final check, read the passage once more and label every verb for tense, every noun for countability, and every connector for function. Keep a short error log of your own recurring mistakes and review it before writing. This routine turns isolated rules into durable habits across all five hundred lessons.
