Grading Comparisons

Much, far, slightly, by far and the definite article.

b2

Explanation

Use much, far, a lot, slightly or a bit before a comparative to show degree, and by far before a superlative. The superlative normally takes the definite article. Do not use very before a comparative.

Examples

  • This version is far clearer than the draft.
  • He is slightly taller than his brother.
  • It is by far the busiest week of the year.

Common mistakes

  • This version is very clearer.

    This version is far clearer.

    Very cannot modify a comparative.

  • It is by far the busiest week.

Correct: by far intensifies the superlative.

Fine before a superlative, never before a comparative.

  • He is more taller than his brother.

He is slightly taller than his brother.

    Never double the comparative.
