πŸ“– Reading Passage

Native audio

A reef keeps double books. Symbiotic algae pay rent in sugars brewed from sunlight; polyps repay with shelter and carbon dioxide. When seas warm one degree too far, the partnership ruptures: polyps evict their tenants and turn bone-white, living on reserves while waiting for cooler currents. Some recover with tougher algae strains, trading growth for heat tolerance like a firm swapping profit for insurance. Marine accountants now price the reef’s services: breakwaters valued against storm damage, nurseries against fishery yields, beauty against tourist dollars. The sums dwarf rescue budgets, yet the ledger’s final line is not financial. A reef that has grown since the pyramids cannot be rebuilt within a human contract. Restoration has become an industry with its own arithmetic. Nurseries grow fragments on frames, divers cement them onto damaged reef, and monitoring teams count survival month by month, knowing that a colony reaching fist size has taken years. Costs are falling, yet the area restored each year is measured in hectares against losses measured in thousands. Geneticists propose assisted evolution, selecting heat-tolerant symbionts and cross-breeding hardy corals, a strategy critics liken to treating symptoms of a fever that has not been diagnosed. The strongest case for restoration may be neither ecological nor financial but public: a visible underwater garden gives coastal communities something to defend, and defence is what reefs need most.

πŸ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: professional authority. Reading: The Coral Ledger.
