πŸ“– Reading Passage

The brain replays the day during sleep, and scientists can now watch it happen. In deep sleep, slow waves wash across the cortex while the hippocampus replays firing patterns from waking hours, as if rehearsing. In REM sleep, the brain cuts noradrenaline, letting emotional memories soften while facts harden. Students who sleep after learning recall 25 percent more than peers who stay awake. Naps help too: a ninety-minute nap containing both stages boosts recall nearly as much as a full night. All-nighters backfire because the replay never runs. The lesson for learners is blunt: study, then sleep on it. Sleep also decides what gets forgotten. During REM sleep the brain dampens noradrenaline, so emotionally charged experiences are replayed in a calmer chemical setting and lose some of their sting. That may explain why a painful memory feels less sharp after a few nights, and why sleeplessness after a shock can leave it vivid for years. Timing matters as well. Cramming until dawn leaves no window for consolidation, so material learned in the last hours competes with the exhaustion of the exam itself. Researchers now test simple interventions: short naps before an afternoon test, quiet rooms for revision, and later school start times. Steady sleep is not laziness but part of the learning method.

πŸ“ Grammar Notes

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: entrepreneurship. Reading: Sleep and Memory.
