Relative Clauses
Relative Clauses with Prepositions and Where
Whose, where, when and stranded prepositions.
Explanation
Use where for places and when for times, often instead of a preposition plus which. Prepositions can move to the end of the clause in everyday English but stay before the pronoun in formal writing.
Examples
- The café where we met has closed.
- That is the day when we signed.
- The colleague with whom I worked has left.
Common mistakes
The café which we met has closed.
The café where we met has closed.
Places take where.
The day which we signed was cold.
The day when we signed was cold.
Times take when.
The colleague whom I worked with has left.
Acceptable in speech, but formal writing keeps with before whom.
