Conditionals

Mixed Conditionals

Past condition with a present result, or the reverse.

c1

Explanation

Mix the patterns when the times differ: an unreal past condition can produce an unreal present result, and an unreal present state can explain a past result.

Examples

  • If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
  • If she were more organised, she would have caught the train.

Common mistakes

  • If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor.

If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

The past condition pairs with a present result.

  • If she was organised, she would have caught it.

If she were more organised, she would have caught it.

Keep the subjunctive in the if-clause.
