Which verbs take -ing and which take to.

Explanation

Some verbs take a gerund (enjoy, avoid, finish, mind, suggest), some take an infinitive (want, hope, decide, promise, refuse), and a few take both with a change in meaning, notably stop, remember and try.

Examples

  • I enjoy walking early.
  • She decided to postpone the trip.
  • He stopped smoking last year.

Common mistakes

  • I enjoy to walk early.

    I enjoy walking early.

    Enjoy takes -ing.

  • She decided postponing the trip.

    She decided to postpone the trip.

    Decide takes to.

  • He stopped to smoke last year.

    He stopped smoking last year.

    Stopping to smoke means pausing in order to smoke.
