Explanation

Determiners occupy a single slot, so an article cannot combine with another determiner: you cannot write the my book or a some bread. Some combinations exist in fixed orders, such as all the, both the, half the and such a.

Examples

All the tickets sold out.
Both the drivers agreed.
Half the class was absent.

Common mistakes

The my book is on the shelf.
My book is on the shelf.
Drop the article.
A some bread was left.
Some bread was left.
One determiner only.
Half of the class were absent and half the class was absent in the same sentence.
Choose one form.
Consistency matters more than the choice.
