Adjectives Ending in -ed and -ing

Bored or boring, interested or interesting.

Explanation

The -ing form describes the thing that causes a feeling, and the -ed form describes the person or thing that experiences it. Mixing them reverses the meaning, which is why the confusion is worth drilling.

Examples

  • The lecture was boring, so the students were bored.
  • Her explanation was confusing and I felt confused.
  • The news was surprising and we were surprised.

Common mistakes

  • I am boring of this book.

    I am bored with this book.

    The experiencer takes -ed.

  • The film was interested.

    The film was interesting.

    The cause takes -ing.

  • She was interesting in the topic.

    She was interested in the topic.

    Interested describes the person.
