C2 Original-Research Part 2: Original Research
Lesson 82 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
Every doctoral student hears the same demand: be original. The command sounds noble and means almost nothing until it is translated into practice. In mature fields, originality rarely means discovering an untouched topic; it means finding a sharper question, a cleaner method, or a fairer test of a familiar claim. The trap is believing that novelty equals value. Journals reward surprising results, so researchers chase strange findings that may not survive repetition, while careful replications that correct the record struggle to find a publisher. A healthier standard asks three questions. First, is the claim precise enough that evidence could prove it wrong? Second, does the method fit the question, rather than the tools the lab happens to own? Third, would the result matter if it turned out differently? A negative answer that settles a debate is worth more than a flashy positive one that collapses on retest. Supervisors can help by praising good failures: the experiment that kills a beloved hypothesis cleanly has done real work. Originality, understood this way, is not a property of topics but of thinking. The student who asks why everyone measures a phenomenon the same way, and dares to measure it differently with reason, has already begun.

๐ Grammar Notes
This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: original research. Reading: The Originality Trap.
