C2 Editing Part 2: Editing
Lesson 92 of 10 in this unit.
๐ Reading Passage
Open offices promised collision and creativity; they delivered coughs and headphones. Studies now show face-to-face talk falls by two-thirds when walls come down, while email triples: people hide in text to escape overhearing. The deeper loss is cognitive. Complex thought needs long unbroken stretches, yet the average knowledge worker switches tasks every three minutes, each glance at a neighbour resetting the mental stack. Architects respond with libraries of silence: phone booths, deep-work halls, and booking systems that treat focus as inventory. The paradox resolves neatly. Collaboration thrives not where noise is constant but where quiet is available, so minds arrive at meetings with something worth colliding over. The results are encouraging where the design is honest. Offices that pair open areas with bookable silence report better focus and, crucially, more voluntary conversation, because talking is a choice rather than a default. Some firms go further and measure interruption cost, counting how long colleagues need to resume a task after being addressed, then setting shared hours when nobody may tap a shoulder. Remote work complicated the picture: homes offer silence but also laundry, children, and refrigerator doors, so the deepest concentration often happens in libraries and rented rooms. The emerging consensus is unromantic. Creativity is not summoned by architecture alone; it needs slack, privacy, and enough boredom for the mind to finish a thought.

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun. Rewrite any three sentences in your own words while keeping tense and meaning intact. Theme: editing. Reading: In Praise of Quiet Rooms.
