Numbers persuade because they appear to speak without a speaker. A chart rising to the right feels like proof, even when the axis begins at an odd point, the sample is tiny, or the categories shift halfway through. Skilled advocates exploit this trust. They choose percentages when totals embarrass them, totals when percentages do, and averages when the distribution tells another story. None of this is lying in the strict sense; each figure may be accurate, yet the impression is engineered. The defense is not innumeracy but disciplined suspicion: always ask what is counted, what is excluded, and what the same data would look like drawn differently. Consider crime statistics announced as a twenty percent rise. Without the base rate, the period, and the definition of the offense, the number alarms without informing. A responsible reader converts the claim back into human scale: how many events, among how many people, over how much time, compared to what? Institutions can help by publishing raw tables beside polished graphics, so skeptics can check the work. Until that habit spreads, every striking figure deserves the same response a careful listener gives a gifted orator: moving, certainly, but show me the parts you chose not to emphasize.

This lesson practices clear paragraph structure: one main idea per paragraph, stated first, supported with two concrete details, and closed with a linking sentence. Prefer active verbs and precise nouns. Connect ideas with however for contrast, furthermore for addition, and therefore for consequence. Keep sentences under twenty-five words so each claim stays traceable to its evidence. Practice by labeling each sentence in the reading: underline the main verb, circle the time marker, and check that every they and it points to a named noun.
