Past Continuous
Lesson 4 of 4 in this unit.
π Reading Passage
Last summer, Emma decided to take a short break from her busy job in the city. She booked a small cottage near a lake and planned to spend a week relaxing. On the first morning, while she was sipping her coffee on the porch, she heard a strange noise coming from the garden. It turned out that the neighbourβs dog was digging a hole near the fence. Emma watched the dog for a few minutes, wondering why it was acting so oddly. While the dog was digging, a squirrel was hopping from tree to tree, trying to avoid the commotion. Later that afternoon, Emma was reading a novel when the rain started to fall heavily. She was reading when the power suddenly went out, so she lit a candle and continued her story by its soft glow. The next day, she decided to go for a walk along the lakeside trail. While she was walking, a group of children were playing football on the grass near the water. They were shouting and laughing, and the sound echoed across the lake. Emma smiled because she remembered her own childhood games. As the sun began to set, she was taking photos of the colorful sky when a sudden gust of wind blew her hat off. While she was chasing the hat, a friendly fisherman was pulling his net, and the water sparkled with fish. By the time she caught her hat, the fisherman was already packing his gear. The following evening, Emma was cooking dinner when her phone rang. It was her sister, who was calling to ask if Emma could join a family video call the next day. While Emma was listening, the kitchen timer buzzed, reminding her that the soup was ready. She turned off the stove and served the soup, feeling satisfied with her peaceful weekend. The whole week was full of small moments that were happening at the same time, showing how the past continuous can describe actions that were in progress when something else occurred.

π Grammar Notes
The past continuous (was/were + verbβing) is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past. It often appears together with a simple past verb to show that one action was happening when another occurred. For example: "She was reading when the phone rang." The structure is formed with the past tense of the verb *to be* (was for singular subjects, were for plural) plus the present participle. Use it for background scenes, parallel actions, or temporary situations. Time expressions such as while, when, as, and as soon as frequently introduce the clause. Remember that the past continuous is not used for completed actions; for that we use the simple past. It can also describe two simultaneous actions: "The children were playing and the parents were watching."
